The Trump administration's failure to adhere to the Olympic ideals and the Olympic Charter makes the United States unfit to host the Olympics
- Regarding Trump's signing of an executive order banning transgender from participating in women's sports -
On February 5th, 2025, it was reported that President Trump signed an executive order banning transgender from participating in women's sports. The executive order states, "We should review and adjust, as necessary, the policy of allowing men to enter the United States to participate in women's sports," and even suggests that transgender athletes will not be allowed to enter the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. In addition, the State Department is pressuring the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to revise the gender qualification criteria for participating in women's sports. This is a complete violation of the basic principles of the IOC’s Olympic ideals and the spirit of the Olympic movement.
Article 4 of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism states that ‘The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have access to the practice of sport, without discrimination of any kind in respect of internationally recognised human rights within the remit of the Olympic Movement. The Olympic spirit requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.’ Article 6 states that ‘The enjoyment of the rights and freedoms set forth in this Olympic Charter shall be secured without discrimination of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.’ The Olympic Charter, paragraph 6 of the Mission and role of the IOC states ‘to act against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic Movement’.
Above all, Article 7 of the Fundamental Principles of Olympism states that ‘Belonging to the Olympic Movement requires compliance with the Olympic Charter and recognition by the IOC.’ The United States under the Trump administration, which ignores the fundamental principles of the Olympic ideology and does not comply with the Olympic Charter, is not qualified to host the 2028 Olympics. The IOC should warn the Trump administration and the U.S. Olympic Committee for not adhering to the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter.
The Korean Sport and Olympic Committee should also be on guard. Rather than resisting any discrimination that could affect the Olympic movement, they should not make the mistake of aiding discrimination and hatred. We should not forget that the realization of sports for all, where sports enjoyment is guaranteed without any kind of discrimination, is the practice of the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter.
