We welcome the Constitutional Court's unanimous decision to remove Yoon Seok-yeol from office and reaffirm everyone's right to sports.
Today, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea unanimously ruled to remove Yoon Seok-yeol from office. This decision is a consequence of the military rebellion on December 3rd, which destroyed and trampled upon the constitutional order and democracy of the Republic of Korea. Citizens, as sovereign citizens, resisted martial law with their bodies and were infuriated by the illegal escape of the rebellious criminals. Citizens refused to tolerate this betrayal of the spirit of the Constitution and justice, and for the past four months, they have gathered in the squares, chanting loudly for impeachment and removal. Today's ruling by the Constitutional Court to remove Yoon Seok-yeol is entirely natural, and we welcome it.
We know well that this removal is not simply about holding one individual accountable. The acts and phenomena that have violated common sense in our society since martial law have surprised everyone and were unexpected. It was a moment when our firmly held systems and beliefs were completely shattered and rendered inoperable. At the same time, vested interests and corrupt power groups have shamelessly and vividly exposed themselves. Long-standing issues that we should have quickly weeded out and resolved have finally, voluntarily and clearly emerged.
The Yoon Seok-yeol administration, along with the vested interests that have become parasites of power, has attempted to reverse many things. Simultaneously, it has confirmed that our place may not be where we once were. While we understand that we must return to our daily lives, we have also learned that we must create a society free from civil war and betrayal. We have also learned that the democracy we once believed in was fatally flawed. Now, we must move forward toward a new society. This is why social reform and systemic reflection are necessary.
The task of forming a new society will now fall to the new government. The world we reunite with must have a robust system and legal framework that strongly guarantees the fundamental rights of its citizens. It must be a peaceful and human rights-based society that protects the socially vulnerable and eliminates marginalization. We must prevent those in power and vested interests from using the law to oppress the people in the name of the state. We must reject forces that reject or resist the new world and confront them with determination and confidence. We must also be wary of recent global far-right trends.
The Sports Human Rights Institute will lead the way. We will strive to ensure that no one is marginalized or excluded from sports in this new world and society. We will not neglect reform and transformation until human rights are established as a top priority in sports and achieve irreversible sustainability.
