Call for Participants 🛷 Human Rights Media Monitoring Group for the Milan Winter Olympics – “All-in-Me”

The Sports & Human Rights Institute of Korea is recruiting participants for a Human Rights Media Monitoring Group ahead of the 2026 Milan–Cortina Winter Olympic Games 📺.

⛸️ Watch the Olympics Together with Human Rights Advocates

Human rights monitoring is an activity that involves observing potential human rights violations, examining their structural causes, and collectively exploring alternatives and solutions.

During the Milan–Cortina 2026 Olympic period, this monitoring group will focus on:

• Domestic Olympic broadcasts, news coverage, and social media content
• Whether the IOC’s human rights framework and media guidelines are being properly followed

From a human rights perspective, participants will identify and share issues such as discrimination, hate speech, or other problematic representations, and discuss possible alternatives together.

🏂 We Welcome Those Who Felt “Uncomfortable”

This monitoring group is recommended for:

• Viewers who have felt uneasy watching sexist or racist sports commentary
• Human rights advocates who are critical of mega-sporting events
• Anyone with an interest in sports and human rights

All are welcome to join.

⛷️ Recruitment Details

• Number of participants: Approximately 5 people
• Application deadline: Sunday, February 1, 2026
• Schedule:
  • First meeting: Weekday evening (7:00 PM) during the first week of February
  • Thereafter: One meeting per week (total of 4 meetings)
  • Final schedule will be confirmed based on participants’ availability

• Week 1:
  Introductions / Lecture on the Olympic human rights framework and media guidelines / Monitoring guide
• Weeks 2–3:
  Sharing and discussing monitoring experiences
• Week 4:
  Organizing monitoring results and sharing reflections

🥌 Preview of the First Session

In the first session, we will examine:

• The IOC Human Rights Strategy Framework, developed to uphold human dignity through sport and ensure that everyone can enjoy rights and freedoms without discrimination
• The “Milan–Cortina 2026: Human Rights and Social Responsibility Guidelines”, which emphasize inclusion, diversity, and safe sport

Based on these principles, we will discuss how to conduct practical human rights media monitoring during the Olympic Games.

• Eun Joo Ham, Secretary General, Sports & Human Rights Institute of Korea
  Former field hockey player who identifies as an activist through sport. Majored in sports sociology and currently teaches at several universities 😀
• Ian Bahc, Office Manager and Activist, Sports & Human Rights Institute of Korea
  A late-blooming recreational athlete who has started going to a climbing gym five times a week this year (though not sure how long this diligence will last 😅)
