On Saturday, 7 March, the 41st Korean Women's Rally, commemorating International Women's Day 2026, was held in front of Seosipjagak in Seoul—the same location where citizens had gathered the previous year to call for the impeachment and immediate removal of then-President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The SHRI hosted a booth under the theme "United Through Sport!" and organized the "Sports Rights Triathlon" to promote gender equality and the right to participate in sports.
Our booth featured a garland bearing the message "Sports for All" and the SHRI’s flag. We also displayed photographs from the Hoho Gymnasium Project, which supports women sanitation workers through sport, and created hand-held placards advocating for gender equality in sport and expressing hopes for peace and an end to war.
The Sports Rights Triathlon consisted of two individual sports challenges—keeping a table tennis ball bouncing and throwing balls into a basket—along with a Sports and Human Rights Quiz. Participants took part in a series of true-or-false questions on topics such as the right to participate in sports, Korea's Framework Act on Sports, and Title IX. We were also delighted to welcome many visitors to our booth, including former activists from Cultural Action, one of the Institute's long-standing partner organizations, as well as many other supporters.
Many participants enthusiastically joined the Sports Rights Triathlon and signed up for "A Chance Encounter", the Sports and Human Rights Institute's newsletter.
It has now been nearly one year since the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. Building a truly democratic society requires not only gender equality but also the right to participate in sports. The SHRI will continue its work to advance a more inclusive and democratic society through the promotion and protection of sports and human rights.
