[Online Seminar] Transgender Rights and Sport
In February 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted a policy on protecting the women's category in sport, under which only athletes who are determined to be female through genetic testing are eligible to compete in women's events.Meanwhile, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June, the U.S. government has also been exerting pressure to prohibit the participation of transgender women.
As a result, the participation of transgender women in women's sports continues to be the subject of public debate. In Korea, however, these discussions are often imported from overseas and consumed as isolated controversies, stripped of their broader context and underlying issues. Moreover, while debates tend to focus on professional and elite sport, very little attention has been paid to the experiences of transgender people participating in recreational and community sports.
To mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on 17 May, the Rainbow Action Coalition for Sexual Minority Rights in Korea will host an online seminar entitled "Transgender Rights and Sport."
